Chapter 6 - "Ask Me No Questions"

"Aisha says nothing. Her slim body seems to take it in, but by bit, until she's shivering just a little. I notice the gravy stain on her shirt. The ragged edges of it are brown. Aisha picks up her book bag and turns toward Taslima's bedroom.
'Aisha?' Auntie calls after her.
There's no answer on the other side of the door."

I think that this quote shows where Aisha starts to become less self-centered. After Nadira gets mad at her at lunch, Aisha seemed to be more quiet and sullen. I think that Nadira should've taken this chance to try and talk to Aisha about everything, but instead Nadira takes advantage of Aisha's quietness to become louder and bossier. I don't think that Nadira made the right choice. She may've wanted revenge, but I really wish the sisters would bond with eachother more.

  1. Note to Maddie:
You wrote but by bit. :)

I think that in this "scene" Aisha isn't exactly less self-centered, she is just really shaken by all the crazy things that happened in that day. Nadira stood up to Aisha, which can't be easy for Aisha to take in, considering she is used to being the bossy, "perfect" person.
Maddie, I do agree that Nadira should open up and let her sister at least attempt to bond with her. Although my prediction is that that time is soon to come.

  2. I really like this quote. It shows how Aisha is becoming a little less "perfect" and is adapting to normal-ness. She isn't being so mean to Nadira, now that her parents aren't here. I think Aisha was more mean to Nadira around her parents because they never did anything about it. They teated Aisha like royalty and she wanted it to stay like that. Now that they are not with their parent, she has seen that its not ok to treat yourself like royalty, and leave everyone else in the dust. She sees how Auntie and Uncle don't treat her like royalty, and Nadira surely doesn't. Because of their parents being gone, it really has changed their characters in good ways.

  5. I also hope that the girls will bond more. Nice choice of quotes. :) btw, please read my quote. I like it alot tonight. :) please comment. :) on mine. :) anyways, I'm wondering how the author is going to really make Aisha crumble. She seems to be wearing her down bit by bit, but I'm wondering how she'll finally crack. What do you think? :)

  6. I agree with Karly how Aisha seems to become a little less "perfect." I thought that Nadira shouldn't have been so harsh on Aisha, who was just trying to open up and bond with her. Now, I think it will be harder for Nadira to open up to Aisha because she messed up. I hope they can bond!
    Good quote choice!

  7. I also agree with Karly that Aisha seems to be changing her character, as well as Nadira, now that their parents aren't with them. I think that they are also going through many tough times including being taken away from their parents which is effecting them in worse ways as well. I do wish that the sisters would learn to bond more but I think that whenever one sister tries to open up to the other, they get pushed away by each. They need to learn that just because they think that it is the other sister's fault doesn't make it so. They need to understand that they both made mistakes that they need to recover from and be forgiven in order to move on and bond together. It's not always as easy as every says. They can't just bond, it takes a long process to bond. Just saying it won't make it happen.

  8. Responding directly to Maddie, I disagree that Aisha is becoming less self centered. If anything, she is thinking more about herself. After Nadira yelled at her during lunch, I think she is realizing that not everything is going to go her way. In the quote you chose, I think she is wallowing in self-pity.

  9. I think that Aisha is going to have a brake down very soon. I also think that Aisha is going to change and stop being the perfect child that people think she is.

  10. i think that in this quote aisha is still in shock from what happened at lunch. nadira was too harsh and mean to aisha at lunch. if nadira didn't start yelling at her so intensely (at lunch), i think that aisha would not have walked away in silence ... she probably would have said something (like a question or said something like "don't worry everything is going to be OK). right after the incident at lunch it seems like aisha's personality has been fading away. it seems like nadira and aisha are switching personalities. aisha is now quiet and nadira is kind of turning into a brat.

  11. I think Aisha is realizing that Nadira may be right. Aisha might be sad to have her dream be crushed right before her. Nadira needs to try to comfort Aisha because they are both going through tough times.

  12. Aisha is finally breaking down. I think that the description of the stain on her shirt is kind of a metaphor for how she is feeling at the moment. The stain has ragged edges, and it seems like she is a little ragged around the edges as well. Aisha also kind of reminds me of a tiny chihuahua, because she's tiny and slim, and she's shivering a bit.

  13. I agreed with Maddie’s blog. I think that Nadira should have used the time where Aisha was more respectful of her to talk to her sister about her feelings about their father. They both have a father that is in federal prison because he was living in the United States on and expired visa, but they aren’t talking about it? That’s something that siblings should really be able to comfort each other about. Even though Nadira and Aisha are very different, they’re still sisters, and they really do have to stick together, especially now at a hard time like this. I hope they’ll learn to communicate better than how they do now.

  14. I agree with Anna. Aisha is making these litle gaps for Nadira, but she keeps closing those gaps as soon as they open. I think that Nadira needs to get over their past, and try to grow closer to Aisha rather than pulling away.
